VARIATIONS ON THE TOLKIEN TRAIL Sunday 23rd May 10.30am
Meet at the War Memorial in the centre of Hurst Green for an easy to moderate 6 ½ mile walk which will include historic variations on the Tolkien trail around Stonyhurst and down to the rivers Hodder and Ribble.
Firstly, we will have a short visit to Stonyhurst College.

RIBBLE STEAM RAILWAY

Meet at the docks at Chain Caul Road, Riversway Docklands, Preston, the Ribble Steam Railway gives visitors an
opportunity for unlimited travel along the 1 ½ mile dock and
riverside line as well as access to their extensive museum and workshop – they have over 40 industrial locomotives dating from 1865 to the 1970s.
There is a buffet and shop as well as ample free on site car parking .
Admission Prices:-
Concession and child £3.50,
Family (2 + 2) £15.00.

ABBEYSTEAD

Meet at the car park at
Soops Bridge, Abbeystead
village for a 2 mile circular
walk, through woods along
part of the Wyre Way, to the
large weir, then cross the river to go a little way downstream to see the memorial for the lives lost in the Abbeystead disaster.
We’ll return to the village through fields and on a short bit of road. For anyone wanting to extend the walk there may be time to go along the Wyre Way in front of Abbeystead House.

KNOWLE GREEN – A WALK THROUGH HISTORY

Sue Holden will meet us at Knowle Green Village Hall car park for an approx. 4 mile
walk. Sue will tell us all about this former busy industrial area -
Pinfold Farm, Fleet Street and Lane and Written Stone Lane.

WHALLEY ABBEY
Tuesday 27th July –7pm

Meet at the Conference Centre car park, and we wil be given a conducted tour of the extensive ruins and grounds of the Abbey by a lay Brother. The Abbey of Stanlow in Cheshire moved to Whalley in 1296 – the church was built from 1330 to 1380, but the Abbot’s Lodging and Infirmary were only completed in 1440. At the dissolution of the monastery in 1537 the property was sold to Ralph Assheton, and it remained in private ownership until 1923 when it was acquired by the Church of England.

DALESRAIL

Meet at Clitheroe railway station 9.45am
The Dalesrail train leaves Clitheroe at 09.51
and returns at 19.55 (an earlier train returns 17.55).
There is a choice of 6 guided walks.
From a strenuous 14 mile from Hawes to an easy 3 mile stroll from Richmond There are 2 walks in Wensleydale, using a coach for which extra fare is payable.
There is a moderate 9 mile walk from Garsdale, and an easy 8 mile walk from Horton to Clapham which returns to Settle by bus (concessions free).
Alternatively, you could visit Carlisle, Appleby, or Kirkby Stephen.

WATER MILLS ON UPPER CHIPPING BROOK
Tuesday 17th August 6.45pm
Muriel will meet us at Wolfen Mill, and the walk will be about 1 ½ mile down to Chipping village, so one option is to park in the village and walk to the start.
We will be exploring 3 mill sites, Wolfen Mill, Saunder Rake (Tweedys) and Kirk Mill along the road or good paths with one or two hills.

STONYHURST COLLEGE
Tuesday 21st September 7pm
Park outside the main entrance to the college which is round to the right when you’ve come down the main drive.
Jan Graffius, librarian, will meet us and briefly show us round some of the college mainly on the first floor (no lift), and then into one of the libraries which houses most of their precious artefacts.
